What Is Jr Bible Quizzing? |
|
Tournaments |
|
Bible quizzing competition occurs primarily at the District level. Beginning in January, the Ohio district hosts one tournament per month at locations throughout the State. These tournaments are open to all affiliated teams in Ohio. The season concludes in June at the State finals tournament. The top teams will then qualify for the North American Junior Bible Quizzing Tournament (NAJBQT) in the last week of July.
Teams also have the opportunity to compete in other District sponsored Invitational's. This gives quizzers the opportunity to test their skills against different teams, make new friends, and travel to new places, The biggest of these are called Extravaganzas which are sponsored by the UPCI. These are special tournaments scheduled in March and April which are located in the North Central, South Eastern, South Western, And Western Regions of the United States. |

Getting Started |
|
Before you start promoting a new ministry, first contact your pastor. Don't set sail without your pastor on-board. Second, contact the Ohio district JBQ coordinators, Morey and Cindy Redmond at ohiojrbiblequizzing@yahoo.com. With your pastor's blessing, and the Redmond's help, you'll be ready to start putting your team together.
In order to recruit members for your team you will need to do some promotional work. Promotions do two things: inform and inspire. Your goal is to inform and inspire BOTH parents and children. Committed parents are essential for success. Promotions can be as simple as one-on-one conversations with parents and children or they can be as elaborate as video presentations for the entire church. One important thing to remember though—you can't spread a fire that doesn't burn in you. Spend time in prayer for this ministry and let the fire kindle inside of you first. |

Teams of 3-5 children are formed at affiliated churches that then compete against each other in tournaments throughout the state. Children 9-12 years of age participate in the Junior Division and the children 8 years old and younger participate in the Beginner Division. Each game consists of 15 questions of varying levels of complexity and point value. Adding to the emphasis on quick recall is the aspect of interrupting. A quizzer may attempt to interrupt the question, but they must then finish the question accurately and then give the answer. This adds an element of speed to the game and makes for intense and exciting competition. |

Once you have a group of interested candidates it would be wise to hold an orientation before the season starts. In this meeting, you can explain your plans for the coming year, hand out schedules, convey your expectations for parents and quizzers, and discuss ordering materials, etc.
All Bible Quizzing materials are provided by Gary and Jo Ann Powers at bqpowers.com. Typically, a quizzer will only need a box of verse cards to begin memorizing. There are also CD and mp3 files available which have verses put into songs that are often effective with very young quizzers. New coaches should expect to buy a buzzer system, a set verse reference sheets, a rules manual, practice questions, and score sheets. Others helpful tools are also available.
All this talk about buying materials leads to the topic of fund raising. Bible quizzing can be expensive. Monthly registrations cost $50 for the first team, and $40 for the second team. Overnight tournaments (like Extravaganzas, and NAJBQT) have hotel costs and every trip requires transportation and meals as well. Therefore fund raising is a regular part of a coach's responsibilities.
A coach's main responsibility is running the weekly practices. Verse memorization can begin as early as November. Children memorize and review their verses with their parents at home. In practice, quizzers learn the rules of Bible quizzing, they develop their question-answering skills, and they hone their knowledge of the verses they've memorized. These practices help prepare for the monthly tournaments. When to hold practices will depend on what fits best for your team. Holding practices on the day of church services can make transportation easier for parents. How long and how often you practice will be dependent on how much time you are willing to commit. |

Junior Bible Quizzing is a ministry of the United Pentecostal Church International Sunday School Division. The primary objective is to teach children the Word of God as we are commanded in the scriptures. Each year new material is selected for learning and memorization. The ability to retain and recall the scriptures is then put to the test in what is referred to as Bible Quizzing. The purpose of Bible quizzing is to teach children the precious, infallible Word of God. David said the Word was a lamp to his feet and a light to his path (Ps. 119:105). David also said he hid God's Word in his heart so he would not sin against God (Ps. 119:11). The Word of God is the Truth (John 17:17) and full of living power (Heb. 4:12). The ministry of Bible quizzing provides enough of an incentive for children nationwide to spend hundreds of hours of personal time studying the awesome Word of God. No other ministry can say that. |
